LOUISVILLE ANGELS BASEBALL - COACHES CORNER  2003 THRU 2007

2003 Coach's Corner

General Manager - BIll Stacy
Bill has been with the Angels since their inception in 2003.  He takes great pride in the types of people he can bring into
the organization.  "I believe that the perfect team has 1. talent 2. desire 3.chemistry. We look for the individual who has
a good attitude and talent to perform.  I think we are getting close to the right mix of people for the style of play we play.
I am looking forward to 2005 and providing we don't loose key players to injuries, I think we can be successful.  We leave
a few spots open during the season incase there is a player or two we need to pick up as we go.

Head Coach - BIll Stacy
With two seasons under his belt Bill is looking forward to the upcoming season.  "We still have a great nucleus and I am
confident we have the right mix to make a serious run at the playoffs.  Let's make no bones about it, I want this team to win
a World Series title. That is the goal every year and we will keep plugging in pieces until we get the job done."

Assistant Coach - Deam Doak
Dean comes back to the Angels for a second season.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and gamesmanship that the Angels
will rely on all season.  Old school throwback to the way the game used to and still should be played.

Announcer - Bobby Marples

2003 At A Glance

The inaugural season of the Louisville  Angels got under way with a bang in 2003.  Opening day was May 27th 2003  and right off the bat the
Angels went to extra innings against the leagues  most storied franchise Louisville Stars. The Angels pulled out a close  one to squeak by 4-3
on
Jesse Cronen's  sac fly in the top of the 8th inning.  Game 2 against the Colonels the Angels bats were out in force as they jumped to a 7-1
lead in the 5th inn. The  Angels went on to win 9-4 with
Mike Prestigiacomo  pitching 6 strong inn and getting his first win  of the year.  Aaron
Jackson, Bill Stacy
and Dan Romain homered  for the Angels.  Game 3 was against the Riverats and it would prove to be  the only time the Angels
were competitive against them.  It was an offensive explosion for the Angels led by
Bill  Stacy going 4-4 with his second home run and 5  RBI.  Staff
ace
Will Sowers  picked up the win in relief to move to 2-0.  The final was 12-4.  Game 4 saw the Angels play IPM and Brian  Coffman's big blast in
the 2nd inn. got the  Angels even.
Bryan Lehman's  2 out single in the 4th gave the Angels the lead for good as they went on to  win 7-4 and go to
4-0 in the league.

Game 5 was a rematch of the opener  against the Stars and the Angels gave up 8 walks in a time shortened game.   The Angels lost their first game
of the season 12-5.  Game 6 saw the  Angels give up 6 runs in the 3rd and make 5 errors in a 8-3 loss to the  Colonels.  Game 7 was the first time the
Angels matched up against the  Louisville Tribe.  Justin McCormack held the Angels bats to 3 hits and  the Angels were on a 3 game losing streak falling 9-2.
Jesse Cronen's 3-4 day and Bryan  Lehman's 2-RBI single helped propel the Angels  back on the winning track in game 8.  Newcomer Joey  Summers
threw a 2 hitter and closer Josh  Richie slammed the door with 2 k's to pick up his  2nd save in the Angels 7-2 win.  Game 9 saw a 2-2 game broke with
Brent  Brown's RBI single in the 4th.  Will  Sowers was solid once again getting thewin and Josh  Richie struck out the last 2 batters he faced to record his
3rd save in the Angels 4-2 win.  Game 10 was against the  Riverats.  The Angels gave up 7 runs in the 1st and never recovered.   The Angels continued to
hit the ball with 11 hits but still lost 15-5.

Game 11 saw the Angels come back  from 4-0 deficit to win on
Ben Stott's  RBI single in the last inn. to give the Angels the win, in a close one 5-4.
Will  Sowers
went the distance to move to 4-0 on the season.  Stotts  continued his hot hitting in the next game driving in 3 more runs, giving him 5 in 2
games.
Joey Summers  pitched a 4 hitter to give the Angels a 9-4 win against IPM.  Game 13 saw  the bats jump to a 3-0 lead only to give it  right back
and trail 7-4  going into the bottom of the 6th.
Brent  Gibson's bases clearing double topped a 5 run 6th  that gave the Angels the lead for good in a 9-7
victory over the Stars.
Josh  Richie pitched the last 2 inn. striking out 2  once again in the last inn. to get the win.  The Angels scored twice in  the bottom
of the 6th, in a game they were trailing at the time 3-2 to the  Colonels, to come from behind for the 3rd game in a row.
Brent  Gibson's lead-off triple and
Jesse  Cronen's RBI single gave the Angels the win 4-3.   Will Sowers picked  up the win(5-0) and Josh Richie  got the save(5).  Game 15 was the worst
effort of the year as the Angels  got a good old fashioned butt whooping. They fell to the Riverats 15-1.   Game 16 the next day was much of the same from
the Riverats as the Angels fell  13-0.  Game 17 saw the Angels get back on track with newcomer
Daniel  Burton leading the way with 2 hits and 2RBI .
Will  Sowers picked up the win(6-0) in the Angels 7-  victory over the Louisville Tribe.

Game 18 saw the Angels in the  backstretch and competing for 1 of 3 playoff spots.
Bill  Stacy's 4 hits and Josh  Ray's 2RBI set the pace. Dan  Burton
continued his presence with 2 more hits  and 3 RBI.  Big lefty Josh Stone got  his first win and Josh Richie  the save(6) in a Angels 8-7 victory over IPM.
Game 19 was an old  fashioned pitchers duel against
Sowers  for the Angels and Patton for the Stars.  In a 1-1 game in the bottom of  the 8th Runyan led off
with single and stole second for the Stars.   Manager
Bill Stacy  Int. passed Braun to set up the dp.  Both runners advanced on a gutsy  double steal.  This
left the option of walking Star's slugger Chris Henon  or pitching to him.
Stacy choose  to let Sowers pitch to Henon who Sowers  had had success against
up to that point in the game.  Henon hit a low  pitch out on a line drive for the Stars 4-1 win.  Game 20 saw the Angels  give an unfocused effort in committing
6 errors in a 10-0  whitewash once  again at the hands of the Riverats.

Game 21 the Angels got back on  track with a 9-2 win over IPM to improve their record to 13-8 and a 3 way tie  for second.
Brent  Brown batting  lead-off hit a
3-run homer to pace the Angels.  Game 22 was the start of  a stretch of 4 games in 48hrs.  The Angels pulled within a run, on
Justin  Moore's double and Aaron
Jackson's
RBI single, to trail 5-4.  The  Angels loaded the bases with nobody out, in their last at-bat but only managed  a run and lost in a rain make-up game to
the Stars 7-5.  Game 23 the next  morning was also a make-up and the Angels only had nine players, but so did  the Colonels and with both teams shorthanded
the Angels lost a close one 6-3  Closer
Josh Richie was  forced to start after closing the night before. The Angels had a 3-2 lead, but  gave up a 5-run 5th in the loss.
That made the next two games must win against the  Louisville Tribe.  On Sunday, playing their 3rd and 4th game in 3 days,  the Angels fell behind 2-0 in the first.
In the 2nd inn. the Angel's  tied it on
Brian Coffman's  home run(3) and Dan Romain's  RBI single.  The Tribe answered with 3 runs in the 3rd.  The Tribe  added 2
runs to that and led 7-2.  In the last inn. the Angels scored a  couple of runs on
Justin Moore  and Josh Ray's RBI  singles.  After that the Angels went in order and
lost all hope with a  7-4 loss.  The final game was right after that one and in a close and  hard fought game the Angels season ended with a 7-6 loss.  The final loss
left them at 13-12 and on the outside looking in.  Overall it was a  successful season and one the Angels can build on, but anything short of the  NABF World Series
leaves room for improvement.

Head Coach - Bill Stacy

Bill has been head coach of the Angels since 2003.  He finished his first season 13-12 and looks forward
to the upcoming season.  "I am looking forward to the 2004 season we have become a deeper team then
we were last season.  It remains to be seen if we are a better team.  I have faith in the pieces we have
put together and as always we will tackle the season head on.  We have a good nucleus and we have
added a few key additions that should improve on some weaknesses from last season."

Announcer - Bobby Marples
Bobby comes to us new in 2004.  The Angels are looking forward to having his enthusiasm and interest
in the game. Great to have
aboard and in the booth for 2004.

Coaches Comments 2004

Game 1
-Not bad for a first game.  I thought we hit the ball well and you can see alot of potential for this team.  We
didn't have our full roster in place but we did some things well.  We threw the ball around a bit more than I would
have liked.  The mental focus was missing by a few of the guys.  I understand physical errors but, I am not as
forgiving on mental errors.  A win 13-4

Game 2
-Wow! What a great game.  This was the best game in 2 years that I have seen.  Even if we would have lost
it would have been a great game.  C.J. Gittings and Jason Keck did an awesome job after the first inn.  C. J. told me
he wasn't completely warmed up in the 1st.  Robbie Grinestaff  showed why he is an awesome talent.  His game winner,
ability to hit when it counts, is why he is in the 4th slot. a good win 3-2.

Game 3
-A very sloppy game, starting with my own play at 1B.  Our bats won this one for us.  We threw the ball around
way too much in the 1st 2 inn.  Jesse Cronen and Mike Presto really set the trend for us. So our 3,4,5 hitters can do their job,
knock in runs.  If we play sloppy again we will get beat.  Win 9-4

Game 4
-A well played game.  Chris Saffran had a shutout going until the last inn.  This may have been the best I have seen him
throw.  If he continues to pitch like this we will ride his coatails to victory.  David Crowe's triple gave us the extra run that we needed
to breath a little easier.  Jeff Hall's ability to steal bases really stretched their defense. Win 4-1

Game 5
-A great come from behind victory, as we were trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th.  Dan Romain had a great sac
bunt in  the 6th.  Jeff Hall's hit to tie it kind of relaxed us.  Steve Brutscher  kept them in check the last 2 inn. until we could catch up.
Very pleased with the team meeting the challange and winning our 2nd tight game in come from behind fashion. Win 3-2

Game 6
-Our worst defensive game to date.  I saw a tired team in this 2nd game of our DH.  I would have thought we would have been
a little more focused.  Our lack of concentration really showed and we need to realize that we can't just show up and win.  Offense was
held to 4 hits, as our pitching has been carrying us. Loss 8-2

Game 7-
Bats were held to 2 hits in this shortend game. Very dissappointed in our play. We looked like a little league team on defense,
I was actually embarressed  to be a part of this game.  The lack of focus will change or there will be changes.  Physical errors are sometimes
caused by a lack of mental focus.  We have played 2 poor games in a row.  A note of concern is that we had  a limited number of players at
this game.  I will not tolerate unexcused absence. Loss 10-0

Game 8-
We seemed to bounce back, and finally lost a close game.  Our hitters are not getting the job done, we need somebody to step up
and spark the team.  Offense seems stagnant at this stage.  Saffran pitched a brilliant game, except for 1 inn. In baseball one inn. can mean
the difference in the game. Loss 3-2

Game 9
-Again missing key players, came out flat.  Had runners on 2nd and 3rd nobody out and our 3,4,5 hitters struck out. This set the tone
for the game. Played catch-up the rest of the way.  I felt like this is one we let get away.  IUS wanted to win more then we did.  They did a good
job of moving runners over and executing.  They got timely hitting and had a great squeeze play to seal the deal. I am disappointed in our ability
to get the job done at the plate.  I am tired of guys not showing up and I have added 2 players for Thursday's game and maybe one more to finalize
the roster next week. Loss 4-2

Game 10
-Team continues to make untimely errors.  We are playing not to lose instead of playing to win.  Gittings threw well enough to win but not
as good as he can.  They got a few bloopers that cost us but we had 3 walks, 2 hit batters and 4 errors.  We continue to struggle at the plate.  The
enthusiasm is not there. Loss 5-1

Game 11
-Haven't scored more than 2 runs in a game,  in 6 games, all loses.  We have scored 11 runs in the last 7 games.  23 errors in 6 game
losing streak.  Pitching is the only thing keeping the games close.  I will continue to pick up players until I find enough that want to play hard!  The lack
of hustle stops right now!  I don't care if I have to put pitchers on the field, we better be busting it next game!  Loss 7-1

Game 12
-Lost a heartbreaker 3-2, Played with a purpose for the first time in awhile.  Had the confidence like the first five games.  Very impressed with
McCombs ability to mix up his pitches.  Came a little fat to a few guys but 8 k's in 4 inn is encouraging.  Maybe I could have squeezed with Presto in
last inn. but he strikes out  very few times, and I thought he would hit the ball up the middle.  Hopefully we are back on track and will have a good game
tonight against Riverats. Loss 3-2

Game 13
-Played with a purpose, but we failed to execute. Had bases loaded with one out and failed to put the ball in play. We had a 3 run lead at the time,
thanks to Grinestaff's homerun and Saffrin's pitching.  We didn't execute on defense and allowed them to score to runs.  If not for Cronen's and Hall's great
catches it could have been worse.  We had the bases loaded with nobody out and was lucky to score a run on the squeeze play.  Missed the cutoff and
allowed the winning run to get in scoring position. Toughest loss of the year.  5-4 in 8 inn.

Game 14
-Stayed focused the whole game and pulled away in the last inn.  I think we caught them when they were tired.  That is how they caught us the
first 2 times we played them.  Got a huge performance from Joey Summers and the defense.  I still believe we have a team that can get on a roll and make
the playoffs.  Effort and desire can keep you in the game sometimes until your ability to execute catches up.  Win 5-0

Game 15
-Had to rely on pitching and defense until the bats got going.  Saffrran lost his cool and got tossed.  I think the ump missed the call but he can't get
thrown out in that situation.  Jason Keck did an awesome job.  He has not walked a batter all year.  I was encouraged to see Presto have some success at
the plate.  His bunt single and error gave us the break we needed to seal the deal. Had to really manage down the stretch with pinch runners and who we
chose to pitch to.  I thought they messed up by putting their big 1B in before they went to the field.  This meant that he couldn't pinch hit. Which allowed us
to int. walk Hargett, who was swinging the bat well.

Game 16
-McCombs got his 2nd start after a 4 inn. 8 k's performance. Hit Moel their leadoff hitter and he scored.  This continued a recent trend of where we
get behind early and have to play catch-up.  Came back with 2 runs in top of 2nd on their error on the 1B.  We were tied going into the bottom of the 4th when
they strung together 4 hits in a row,  the last being a 2 run 3B. We rallied in the top of the 7th with 4 runners reaching base in a row. We hit into a game ending
DP with the bases loaded and the winning run on 2nd.  This was a tough one to lose.  Spalding just executed a little better than we did. Loss 5-4

Game 17
-Once again playing against the Stars and Harp led off the game with a homerun.  Down 2-0 before we even swung the bat. Was pleased that we answered
with 3 big runs in the bottom of the first. I knew we would hit because we had our good line-up there.  Our inability to hold a led was on display, as the very next inn.
we got hit around pretty good. Found ourselves down and out 7-3 after 2 inn.  Very disappointed in our starting pitching not doing the job. Loss 8-3

Game 18
-Our rotation got messed up because guys didn't show up in time and we had to flip flop our starters. This is very frustrating when you get the rotation set
and then you have to adjust on the fly.  This problem will be addressed at the end of the season with players being released. Gave a very poor performance all around.
Held to 4 hits and got spanked by the Strikers because had some players had to leave after the 1st game.  Let me state right now that I will get a better commitment
out of the team as a whole or I will start pitchers if I have to.  These next 6 games will tell me alot about who really wants to be here. Those who don't won't be resigned.
Loss 8-0

Game 19
-This game was a total butt whipping and we were on the short end.  Our starting pitching gave up 6 walks and 14 hits but we were out of pitching and it showed.
Once again we were drummed by the Riverats. Having trouble getting nine guys there.  However with age comes experience and I have been down this road before.
We may sacrifice this season, but we will right the ship before next season.  Looking forward to these last few games to see who is with me. Loss 10-0

Game 20
-Once again we only had nine players, but they were 9 guys who wanted to be there.  Josh Richie came ready to play and wound up throwing a 5 inning no-hitter.
I was very pleased to see Josh have some success, because he hadn't really had a chance to pitch in a closing situation on a regular basis.  I still believe that we have
one of the best core group of players in the league.  Win 10-0

Game 21
-This was a tight game all the way thru. The Strikers were held in check for 6 inn. by staff ace Chris Saffran.  He's been a hard luck pitcher all year, We should
have won 2 or 3 more of the games he's pitched.  They scored a run in the 6th and we were down to our last out in the bottom of the 7th.   I was batting and hit a lazy
flyball to rightfield that was dropped and allowed the tying run to score. Bryan Lehaman, the little guy with BIG desire won it with a single.  Win 2-1

This concludes our season because we had the last game rained out and we were involved in 2 forfeits.  The first one was a win against IUS and the 2nd one eliminated us
against the Louisville Tribe.  This was really tough because you hate to be eliminated by not playing.

Coaches Comments 2005

Game One
-Just a horrible performance from our defensive standpoint.  Got a good pitching
performance from
Saffrin, who pitched good enough to win. The season started a week early
and 1/2 the team is still playing in their college spring season.  Offensively we were held to 3 hits.
We have a long way to go.  Suffered a 7-3 loss against the Lightining.

Game Two-
A game I missed because I was at the College World Series, with Spalding.  Newcomber
Maglie Serrano shut down the Stars for 4 innings. We got offense in the 1st. Inn with 6 runs.  The big
hit of the inn. was an inside the park home run by
Chris Childress, when 2 outfielders collided and the
ball rolled to the wall.
Jesse Cronen had 2 hits and 2 Sb.  Josh Richie came on in relief and after a
couple reached he struck out the last 2 hitters.  Win 6-5(Stars)

Game Three-
Caught Spalding on the second game of a double header in blistering heat.  Took care of
business early and got out to a 4-0 after 2.  Hitting is a concern we only had 5 hits.
Cronen continues to
be the catalyst for this team.  I like hitting
Lehman in the nine hole a great spark in the bottom of the order.
Win 5-1

Game Four-
The Stallions caught us on the back end of a double-header and we just didn't get anything going.
A very poor job defensively, we made four errors.  It is becoming apparent that we need help up the middle.
I would rather have Lehman play 2nd base.   Offinsively we were held in check.  Loss 7-1(Stallions)

Game Five
-Just a great effort byMatt MaGaha who went 8 inn and held the Rats in check.  David Crowe's 3 run
homer in the 2nd inn. put us on top 3 -1.  An error by me at 1st and a misjudged flyball that was lost in the sun,
tied the game at 3.  We had chances in the 6th and 7th with runners in scoring position but we hit into double
plays to end both inn.  Didn't get good relief in the 9th and let this one slip away.  Had five walks and only 1 hit
in the 9th and without hitting the ball out of the infield they managed to score 5 runs.  Personally I am very
disappointed in the way we let this game get away. Loss 8-3(Riverats)

Game Six-
Came out and put together a good solid game. This is the type of game we can build some momentum.
Cronen
continues to sizzle at the plate, he had 3 hits. David Crowe(3), Bill Stacy(2) and newcomberPhil Blakely(2)
had multiple hits.  Jumped on the early and scored 6 runs in th 1st inn.
Chris Saffran went the distance and gave us
just what we needed. Win 11-1(IUS)

Game Seven
-A big win, we hit the ball well and that was a good thing.  Had a lot of guys out of position, still looking
for consistent middle inf play.  In his first game back,
Will Sowers kept us in the game until we could go on top in the 6th.
Dean Doak
got things started with a double down the left field line.  Stacy and Klawier had rbi singles to cap a 4 run 6th.
We held on in the 7th with some good defensive play in the outfield on back to back good catches by
Philip Blakely and Klawier.
Win 6-3(Strikers)

Game Eight
-A great game until the 7th inn.  This game really exposed our weaknesses, both defensively and with relief pitching.
Maglie Serrano
had a shutout going through six but he was out of gas.  They scored 4 runs in the 7th without hitting the ball out
of the infield.  They pulled off a great double steal on a fake bunt.  Once again this shows our awareness of score, out, situation
is not there.  Good teams finish the job and right now we are only a good team in stretches and not for the whole game. Loss 4-2(Stars)

Game Nine-
A big letdown, we were totally gunned down by their starting pitching.  Our offense did not make the adjustment at the plate.
He kept coming with fastballs early in the count and we kept wiffing.    Nine strikeouts thru 5 innings.  Held to 2 hits and just a total lack
of ability to meet the challenge.  We have backed ourselves into a corner because we haven't come ready to play on a consistent basis.
Loss 5-1(Lightining)

Game Ten-
Totally outplayed in all facets of the game.  We still are not making adjustments at the plate.  Ballard obviously didn't have
his good stuff, but we were not patient enough.  Thought we could just show up as a team and win.  I've been around long enough to
know that when your attitude is that way, that is when you get your lunch handed to you.  O-8 production out of the 2 and 3 slots in the
order.  Loss 6-2(IUS)

Game Eleven-
Jesse Cronen continues to be on fire.  3-4 tonight and on base all 4 times.  He is hitting 577(15-26) and none of his hits have
been cheap all year.  Finally starting to reach his potential on a consistent basis.
Klawier showed signs of getting hot with a double and
a triple.  Sparkplug
Bryan Lehman had a big triple to bust the game open.  First time in awhile that we scored runs from start to finish.
A solid performance on the hill by Will Sowers and a dominating job by
Matt MaGaha in the closers role.  Win 7-2(Strikers)

Game Twelve
-A 2-2 game into the bottom of the 6th, Will Sowers pitched a great game and did the job by keeping us in the game.
We squandered an oppurtunity in the 2nd.  Our hitting in the clutch let us down.  They scored 2 runs in the 6th and we could not muster
anything in our half.  A disappointing overall, we were missing that fire. Loss 4-2(Stallions)

Game Thirteen-
Ryan Kottke pays dividends right from the start, his game winning hit in the bottom of the 7th gave us a big lift.  I hope
we can use this win to gain some momentum. We blowed a 2-0 lead in the 6th, but showed great resolve in being able to come back.
This is a sign of a club that is maturing.  Their inability to throw strikes in the last inning cost them.  Win 4-3(Spalding)

Game Fourteen
-Biggest win of the year, a great comeback the guys had the desire tonight that translates into winning.  We got down
5-0 after 3 innings.  I felt like I had the right batting order by hitting
Kotte 3rd and Grinestaff 4th.  They came up in the right situation every time.
In the 4th they brought in Cahoe and we erupted for 5 runs to even the game.  Doubles in the inning by
Cronen,Klawier,Grinestaff, and Deaton
were a key.  In the 7thKottke's 2 run single and Grinestaff's RBI single pushed us over the top.  A great job byMagaha keeping us there until we
could get the job done.  Win 8-7(Riverats)

Game Fifteen-
I thought we had finally matured and were ready to make a run.  This was the worst defensive game I have ever been associated with.
A huge disappointment,  we did not come ready to play.  We totally had a lack of focus.  Games like this make you take a long, hard look in the mirror
as a player and a coach.  I know I can refocus, I believe in this team and I am optimistic that they can and will bounce back.  We have backed ourselves
into a corner.  Loss 16-6(Lightining)

Game Sixteen-
A masterpiece in pitching bySerrano.  He showed that he knew how to pitch and kept Spalding hitters off balance all day.  At one point
he retired 15 in a row, until an error in the 7th.  Had a shutout going until the 7th.
Brandon Embry and Jesse Cronen led the way with a couple of hits.
Steve Deaton
hit a bomb that stood up as the difference.  A great bounceback game.  I like the speed in the nine hole it is like having 2 or 3 leadoffs in
a row.  Win 2-1

Game Seventeen
- We are down to the nitty gritty, showdown Sunday with the Stars and 2nd place hanging in the balance.  A great team effort after 2
unusual gaffs by our outfield in the 1st 2 innings led to a run.  Good to see us stay out of the big inning all game.
Saffran pitched out of jams all day, that
is why I stuck with him as long as I did.  We scored 4 runs in the 3rd inn and that was the difference.  They made 2 errors and we capitalized with a big 2
out hit by
David Crowe.  Win 4-1

Game Eighteen
-A game we needed to take care of business, this is the type of game we were losing early in the season.  We got Ryan Kottke back and
he paid immediate returns going 4 for 5.  With him hitting in the 3 hole, it makes our line-up so much better.  He is the type of player that makes players
around him better.
Maglie Serrano was unable to pitch at the last minute and Kent Atzinger stepped up to the challenge and got the job done. We erupted
for 11 runs in the 6th and came away with a win.  I like the move of putting
Brandon Embry in the 2 hole.  He did a great job against IUS . Win 15-7

Game Nineteen
-Showdown Sunday against the Stallions.  Once again we were forced to go to a emergency starter inJosh Richie, who closed the day before.
He held them hitless into the 5th inn.  as did their starter Jenkins.  I felt like the first team to blink would be in trouble.   They scored 2 runs in the top of the 5th.
We got the hit of the year out of
Dean Doak, a shot into right center, that evened the game at 2-2.  They went up 3-2 in the top half of the 6th, but I still felt good
because we had 2,3,4 due up.
Brandon Embry hit one off the top of the fence, in left, and Ryan Kottke came thru once again to tie the game with a hit into right
center.
Kent Atzinger hit a bases loaded pea that was knocked down for a force at 3rd, but it put us on top for good. Matt Magaha came on to close the door in the
7th.  He had already pitched 7 inn. in a game earlier in the day.  I was very pleased the last 2 days with
Josh Richie andKent Atzinger's performance.
Win 4-3(Stallions)

Game Twenty
- The team is starting to peak at the right time.  The bats put this one away early withAndrew Klawier's big 3-run bomb in the bottom of the 1st.
A solid performance by
Chris Saffran on the hill and a 6 run 3rd put the game away.  Moved Klawier to the 5 hole because that has been a spot we have been
hitting into double plays and I wanted speed and pop in that spot.  It paid off because they tried to pitch around
RobbieGrinestaff  and Andrew made it count.
We are on a 5 game winning streak and one win away from clinching a playoff berth.  Win 10-4(Strikers)

Game Twenty One-
What can I say except they just outplayed us. Good teams execute and the Riverats  are just that.   A very well coached team and they played
consistent and steady doing the little things to get the job done.  We gave them 5 outs in three different inn.  We left the door open for the Stars, but we control
our own destiny still.  I feel good about our chances Thursday.  Loss 6-3(Riverats)

Coaches Comments 2006

Game One
- Right out of the gate we play the Stars and face one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers
in the league, in Chris Erxleben.  We looked sluggish, rusty and downright disinterested
once we fell behind.  I decided to staff out for this game because we had a bunch of arms
that needed the work.  What we really needed was some hitting.  The question that comes
to my mind is where was the fire? Maybe it was the layoff for some and burnout for others.
Whatever it was, we need to show more maturity about how we approach a game on an
individual basis.  I'm not jumping ship because I believe in this team.

Game Two-
This is a game we should have won. Marty Popham was devastating for 5 innings.
He had 13 k's through 6 inn. but I thought he was totally gassed.  I went to the bullpen and we
fell apart, I think this goes back to us thinking that we had it won in a 2-1 ballgame.  Once again
we haven't learned when to turn up the heat and when it is time to have fun.  I saw some clowning
late in the game and I will address it at our next game. We need to come out with a little more will
to win.  I stop and realize that some of these guys have never had the approach to winning during the
summer.  That won't fly with me for long.  Winning breeds allot of things, including egos but losing
breeds much more.

Game Three
-Their pitching kept our hitting in check.  This game was simple, they executed the little
things and we didn't.  Our defense was horrible 5 errors in one game will not win in any league.  We
have not played enough games for me to sort thru the new guys.  Chemistry is not there.  Loss 7-3 to
the Riverats.  I think they are ahead of where we are right now because most of their guys have played
together.

Game Four
- 3 loses out of the gate made this game a must win for us.  Finally had some hitting,Riker, Kerins
J.Stange
and Payton carried the load. Magaha on the mound got the job done.  They had him throwing only
out of the stretch at Kentucky and I think this took away his effectiveness.  Part of his ability to get hitters out
is his deception with his wind-up.  Makes me wonder about the pitching coach there?  Once IUS got behind
they kind of mailed it in. Win 9-4

Game Five-
Our first game of the year against Stallions, tight game, we had a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th.
Stivers
threw a good 5 inn. for us, their 3 hole hitter Allen hit a down and in pitch out to right field.  Most guys
I would say it was good location but he is a down and in lefty that can hit those out.  Early in the season you
have to learn hitters and swings all over.  They gave us a run in the 6th with 3 walks and a error.  We went on
top for good in the 7th ,
J. Stange doubled to lead off and a error by the ss allowed us to have runners on 2nd
and 3rd.  I got a hit off of the lefty they had brought in and scored 2 runs.  It was a big win for us, we showed the
ability to take advantage of the other teams miscues. Win 5-3

Game Six
-This was a game I had to miss,  Magaha didn't have stamina in this one and a few errors early allowed
them to get in front early.  Had a bad call in the 5th Ump said
Cody Stange left early but our guys said he didn't.
He was called out on an appeal and that thwarted our chance for a big inning.
Devin Ward was thrown out of the
park for arguing.  Devin needs to know when to let enough be enough and understand his importance to his team
and the game.  I can't and won't have him get thrown out every time he gets upset.  I think sometimes the umps
cross that line too because they don't respect the league enough.  I will fight for my guys when I think that is the
case but not if my guys go over the line.  Loss 6-2

Game Seven
- A rematch with the Stars. 2nd game of a twin bill I wasn't at this one either. It is becoming obvious to
me I have to many guys missing on a regular basis.  Pitching depth is a problem now, because I am missing that
strong bullpen when not enough pitchers show.  They out hit us and outplayed us.  We are just not that good of a
team yet when we fall behind early.  We have allot of holes in the line up right now and I am looking for some guys
to step up and earn some playing time. Loss 7-2

Game Eight
-By far our worst effort of the season.  This is a team we should have beat.  Even with Riker on the mound
we should have won.  I had so many guys gone that we had no starting pitching.  I thought
Riker did a great job for us
through 3 inn.  They scored 6 runs in the 4th on 2 key errors and 2 wild pitches.  We had chance to get out of the inning
but dropped a double play ball that opened the flood gates.  Very disappointed in our lack of focus.  I am beginning to
doubt the heart of some of the guys on this team.  In the old days if you showed up to play, you came ready and you
always played hard.  Too many guys disguising themselves as ballplayers. Let me say this there is a whole lot more to
the game then just showing up.  I saw a team the other night that was losing in the last inn. intentionally bat a guy out
of order and thought it was funny when the guy got a hit.  This was a 3 run game, I happened to be announcing and the
umps didn't catch it.  I wasn't about to let this team disrespect the game, thinking they got over.  Someone in the stands
noticed and the umps called the kid out GAME OVER.  Some of the fans thought they should have gotten over since the
umps didn't catch it.  This just shows you the ignorance of some people at the park.  Loss 8-0 Total Concepts

Game Nine
-Rematch with Total Concepts, we came with better focus and knocked them out early with 3 runs in the first.
Kerins, Bauman, andHoffman led the way with 2 hits apiece. Serrano had good control and shut them down.  Josh Richie
was welcomed aboard and threw 2 shutout innings. Win 5-0

Game Ten
- Another game we just mailed in from a hitting stand point.  Magaha pitched well enough to win but had the one
inn. where he gave up 2 runs. That was all it took to get the loss.  Held to four hits by Smith who had 2 pitches going and was
locating well.  Great hitters adjust from pitch to pitch. Good hitters adjust from ab to ab.  Average hitters adjust from game to
game.  Bad hitters make no adjustments.  We made no adjustments as team as to how this guy was pitching us.  Loss 2-0

Game Eleven
-Much better focus, had a chance going into the last inning, only down 3-1 to the Riverats.   Magnuson came in
and just dominated our hitters with one pitch (fastball).  He struck out 3,4,5 on nine straight fastballs.
Harbridge didn't have
it coming off of vacation and we gave up 3 runs in the 7th.  Loss 6-1

Game Twelve-
Must win game, Farmer had an outstanding performance going the distance in extra innings.  He didn't have a
walk and struck out 8 hitters in 10 inn.  This tells me allot because he is not a strike out pitcher.  He has earned his was into
some more starts.  We were dead on arrival at the plate.  Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th,
Jesse Cronin got the big hit to send
it to extra inn.
Cole Becker singled in the bottom of the 10th to seal the victory.  2-1 over the Lightning

Game Thirteen
-Had almost full roster there for this one,  Magaha shut their bats down and we got some timely hitting.  1-1 game
until we scored in the 5th
T. J. Brinker got things going and Cronen's single and stolen base of 3rd finished it with a throw away
and 2 runs.  Had the bullpen there with
Serrano pitching the 6th and Harbridge closing the 7th by striking out the side. Win 3-1

Game Fourteen-
This was a game we needed to prove to the Bombers that we could beat them.  Scored 2 in the 1st on Jason Payton's
blast to left field.  Our inability to think and play hurt us when there lead off doubled, moved to 3rd on the throw away and scored on
another throw away.  Got some big 2 out hits that put this one away.
Becker, Ward and newcomerAndy Brinker all had big hits in our
4 run 3rd.  We added a few more and
B. J. Stivers gave us 5 strong inn.  Justin Penland came off the DL and pitched 2 good inn. to end
it.  I like where we are as a team now.  We are starting to have better focus and chemistry and it is translating into wins.  Dug ourselves
a whole but we need to just worry about our games and let the rest take care of itself. Win 8-2

Game Fifteen
-A big win for the team, if we have any shot of catching them (Stars), we have to beat teams that are ahead of us in the
standings.
John Harbridge gave us a solid 5 innings.  He kept getting out of jams early, his 7 walks is what got him in them most of the
time.  Plate umpire had a real tight zone.  They put all their eggs in one call, a 2 strike pitch to
Kerins.  Just because I didn't argue the
calls doesn't mean I thought all the close calls, when
Harbridge was pitching, were right.  Finally got the big 2 out hit from someone
(
Kerins) followed by three more doubles that broke the game open.  Shut John down after the 5th and brought on Magaha to close out
the last 2 innings.  Starting to like this line up when it is there. Win 4-1

Game 16
- This game started great.  We hit the ground running and scored 2 runs in the 1st inn. on a double by Brandon Riker and singles
by the
Stange brothers.  A base running error, to end the inn., cost us a shot at a 3rd run.  An ill advised attempted steal in the second
ended a threat for another run in the 2nd.
Farmer started and was in total control for 5 innings.  Missed another opportunity in the 4th
when our runner didn't advance to 2nd on the 1st AB of the inning.  This could of set us up for a bunt situation with 2 shots to score the
runner from third.  Our inability to execute when it counts is what has been costing us games.
Farmer had 2 outs and 2 runners on in the
6th when a groundball was hit to short, I thought we would get the force at 2nd but didn't see if 2B was in position, so the throw went to
first.  The ump hesitated and then said our 1B came off the bag early and the runner was safe.  I didn't know if he did or didn't, but that is
an awful big call on a routine play.  One I have seen them call the runner out most often then not.  A seeing eye hit scored their first run.
The next hitter (8 hole) hit a liner to left, which our left fielder leaves his feet to try and make a diving catch, the ball gets by and all 3 runs
score.  He should have known the situation, and stayed under control.  If you concede the hit you only give up  one maybe 2 runs in that
situation.  We went down 1,2,3 in the 7th to end the game and our hopes of making a playoff run.  Probably the most devastating defeat in
4 years as coach of the Angels.  I will always look back at this team and see un-reached potential because we didn't have enough of the
right guys committed to the team at the same time.   2 key guys were missing because they chose to go to the lake.  That tells me they aren't
serious enough about winning.  With that attitude, believe me it will find a way to rear it's ugly head when they do believe something is
important. Loss 4-3

Game 17
-They're all must win now, got a great complete game effort from Strivers.  This is just what we needed because we go into Monday's
game with full stable of arms ready to go.  Had a few more missed opportunities in the 4th and 5th from an execution standpoint on offense.

T.J. Brinker
led the way with 3 hits and 2 stolen bases.  I thought his heads up bunt got things going for us in the 3rd.  It shows me he has the
ability to take what is given him.  Good to see
Ward is starting to come around at the plate.  His double sealed the deal for us.  We have won
5 out of 6, it should have been 6 straight.  Starting to have a good mix in the line up.  If we make the playoffs this team could be very dangerous.
Cody Stange's raw talent is providing a lift most every game.  We just need him to keep learning different situations and making right choices.
Once that happens then the sky is the limit for him. Win against IUS 6-2

Game 18
-Very disappointing game from a focus standpoint.  Thought we would compete tonight but we just were not there.  3 errors a hit batter
and bb to force the first run in.  Total lack of focus, where is the pride in playing the game?  I believe that I have to face the facts that we only
have a handful of players that care enough about the game to bring effort and focus everyday.  I see focus in
Riker, but I see him starting to
wear down because he is carrying to much of the load right now.  With so many guys a no show, we just didn't have enough bullets in our gun
to do much.  Middle infield was just awful, we lack depth and it ties my hands as a coach.  With a win we still had a chance to make a run.
How could you not be ready for a game like tonight? The answer is we just don't care enough! That's a bunch of crap.  I will not make the same
mistake of putting next years roster together, some guys will never learn how to win.  There are a lot of guys in this league that have big mouths,
that disrespect this game.  Those guys will be joining the other drunks that hang out at the park and think they know more then they do.  The clock
is ticking once you get out of school, unless you take pride in what you do and you put in the work to be ready.  Players today have less and less
dedication to the game, and it is obvious in the way too many players are playing the game.  So my advice to all slackers in this league enjoy it
because there will come a day when you will wish you could still be in it but you will be yesterday's news.  Really am fed up with no shows and
effort! Loss 6-1

Game 19
-A pitchers duel betweenFarmer and Driscoll, first team to blink was gonna lose. Their leadoff hitter reached and scored in the 1st and
that was all it took for us to get beat.  We were held to 2 hits.  Another masterful job by
Farmer, he has shown a great ability to shut down hitters
in this league.  Tough loss 1-0 Stallions

Game 20
-Another loss were we should have competed better.  Stivers didn't have his good stuff out of the gate and we couldn't capitalize on offense.
Our defense is our weakness.  3-3 game into the 7th and we missed the oppurtunity to convert the doubleplay and they scored 3times because of the error.
What can I say we are what we are a bad defensive team. Loss 6-3 Total concepts

Game 21
-Harbridge back on the hill and his best performance of the season. A 4 hit 9 inn. 13 k performance.  We were going to ride him all the way.
Their guy retired 16 in a row between the 2nd and 7th inn.
Jason Payton started the 9th with a single, a single by Josh Stange and a Int. walk to
Andy Brinker,  set the stage for Phil Blakely to get the game winning hit.  A much needed win but, too little too late. Win 2-1 over the Bombers

Game 22-
The last game of the year and we had a chance to play spoiler against the Stars.  A win by us and they don't make the playoffs.  Maybe the
worst defensive game of the year at Derby City.  They booted it around early and let us get up 4-2, and we booted it late and gave them the win on a platter.
I just have a hard time understanding why you show up and go through the motions.  In 39 years I have never just gone through the motions.  It was a typical
loss to how we played all season. We have to get stronger up the middle and need more timely hitting.

2007 Coach's Corner

General Manager - Bill Stacy
Bill has been with the Angels since their inception in 2003.  He takes great pride in the types of people
he can bring into the organization.  "I believe that the perfect team has 1.) talent 2.) desire 3.) chemistry.
We look for the individual who has a good attitude and talent to perform.   A full roster in the 2008 edition
of the Louisville Angels.  This is the deepest team we have had.  It will remain to be seen if is the most
talented.  A  different approach beginning in 2007 (not just college guys), but a mixture of veterans lead
the way to the most successful year in franchise history.  If this core stays together and committed, big things
will happen for the 2008 edition of your Louisville Angels.

Manager - Bill Stacy
Entering his sixth season as manager of the Angels, Bill Stacy is very excited about the possibilities of 2008
Angels.  "We have added some great depth, to go along with our talented core that returns.  The challenge
will be for the guys to put the team first and stick together.  My challenge will be to make all the pieces fit together."

Game 1-Came out of the gate shakey as I expected.  I thought our pitching let us down with walks and hit batters.
Had a chance in the first to break it open, with the bases loaded and one out.  We end up only getting one run and
was tied after one inning.  I thought Edelen was a little wilder than he normally is and they just caught us at the right
time.  The first few games are always a struggle no matter who you play.  This game showed us where we are right now.
I expect hitters to be better on Wed. we will be missing
Hunt and Towns(injury) but have 6 days off afterwards.  Newcomer
Walden
looked good for his first time out.  The "Young Guns" have to lead early because they have been playing all spring.
Herberger got on base 3 times and Glasscock 2b and drove in the only run.  Overall glad to get pitchers work and position
players ab's.  Experience has to take over in order to get through these early games.    Loss 8-1 Orangemen

Game 2
-A much better game from a focus standpoint.  Missing 4 guys from DL and another on vacation but, overall a good
performance.
Wes Walden was absolutely brillant.  Retired the first 10 batters he faced.  Went 5 strong scoreless innings
enroute to picking up his first win of the season.
Stivers looked good for 2nd game in a row.  Blackburn finally got some work.
Brian Blackburn and Bryant Jones set the tables early and we flowed from there on.  Alex Meadows had 3 hits and started to
shake off some rust at the plate.
Zev Bernard continued hot hitting with 2 more hits.  A couple of good at bats by Fenwick kept
us rolling.  Got a glimmer of what this offense can and should do.  A good first win minus, a couple of obvious base running
mistakes.  Win 6-2 Good Guys.
